Japanese Naval Reserve Officer Visor Cap
WWII Imperial Japanese Naval Reserve Officer’s visor cap. Reserve issue headgear closely follows standard IJN officer dress while showing the subtle distinctions associated with reservist equipment.
The cap is constructed from deep midnight‑blue wool with a black ribbed band, a configuration unique to the Navy and immediately distinguishable from Army headgear. It features a black lacquered (patent) visor.
The front displays the correct gold bullion insignia: a fouled anchor set within a wreath, topped by a nautical star, the combination that specifically identifies Naval Reserve officers. This differs from the regular-line officer’s chrysanthemum‑and‑anchor device and is one of the key traits collectors look for. The cap retains its black leather or patent leather chinstrap, secured by gilt‑washed alloy buttons decorated with anchors and cherry blossoms.
Inside, the cap is lined in purple silk with a leather sweatband, with the officer’s name on the inside crown.
